2024 Toyota Mirai Review

Overview
Chances are good you've never seen a Toyota Mirai in your neighborhood. That's not because the Mirai isn't attractive, comfortable, and filled with the latest safety equipment. It's because the Mirai needs hydrogen fuel, which isn't easy to come by, even in the scant (two!) U.S. states where it is sold at a fueling station. Unlike a battery-electric EV that needs to be plugged into a charger, the Mirai uses a fuel cell powered by hydrogen to make the electricity that drives its electric motors. In some ways, that makes it more like a gas-engine vehicle, and therefore, more convenient than a typical EV, which can often take many hours to charge to its full driving range. A few minutes at a fueling station, and the Mirai is ready to go.
At this time, only California residents can purchase or lease a quiet, smooth-riding 2024 Toyota Mirai. With 400 miles of driving range, it is an ideal five-passenger commuter and road trip sedan. But drivers will need to plan ahead, as hydrogen stations are mostly few and far between.
The lack of hydrogen fuel infrastructure has been a key factor limiting the growth of fuel cell vehicles in the United States. Honda dropped its Clarity midsize sedan after 2021. Currently, the Hyundai Nexo is the only other fuel cell-equipped vehicle available in the U.S., and it, too, is limited to California residents. Similar in size to a Hyundai Tucson compact crossover, the base Nexo costs nearly $10K more than the entry-level Mirai XLE sedan, which starts at $51,000. And every Mirai comes with $15,000 worth of hydrogen fuel, compliments of Toyota.
Four hundred miles of electric driving range. Cabin worthy of a luxury badge. Three years' worth of free hydrogen fuel.
Limited number of hydrogen refueling stations. Leisurely acceleration. Sold only in California.
The 2024 Toyota Mirai hydrogen-powered sedan provides approximately 400 miles of driving range in a near-luxury package. But with limited availability and inconsistent hydrogen supplies, it only makes sense for very specific buyers.
What's New for 2024
Trims and Pricing
The 2024 Toyota Mirai is available in two trim levels: XLE and Limited. The Limited is more popular, but we recommend the XLE for most drivers. We'll explain why.
XLE
With 402 miles of driving range, the XLE starts at $51,215 (including a $1,025 destination fee). Toyota equips it with LED headlights and taillights, 19-inch aluminum wheels, digital gauges, remote keyless entry, imitation-leather upholstery, heated power-adjustable front seats (eight-way driver's seat, four-way passenger seat), dual-zone climate control, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
An Advanced Technology package can be added, including a surround-view camera, front and rear parking assist with automatic braking, and front seat footwell illumination. Overall, the XLE is the better value because of its long list of features, greater range, and lower price.
Limited
Priced at $68,180, the Limited provides 357 miles of range. This top version is equipped like a full-featured luxury sedan. It offers buyers a panoramic sunroof, black-finished 19-inch wheels, rain-sensing variable windshield wipers, perforated imitation-leather upholstery, heated and ventilated eight-way power-adjustable front seats, automatic three-zone climate control, and rear window sunshades. A rear touchscreen controls climate control functions, sunshades, rear-seat temperature, and audio controls. Toyota's Advanced Park hands-free parking assist is also standard.
The Toyota Teammate package includes Advanced Drive driver-assist with a 10-year subscription, a 12.3-inch color digital gauge cluster, a 120-volt power outlet, and dual-bulb LED headlights. Super Chrome-finished 20-inch wheels are available for the XLE model.
Engine and Performance
Fuel Economy and Range
The Environmental Protection Agency rates the 2024 Toyota Mirai to return 76 MPGe during city driving and 71 MPGe on the highway for the entry-level XLE model, and 67/64 MPGe for the Limited. The Hyundai Nexo is rated 65/58 MPGe city/highway for its most efficient Blue model, and 59/54 MPGe for its Limited trim. The XLE has a driving range of 402 miles, while the Limited's range is 357 miles. All Nexo models have a 380-mile range.
Refueling the Mirai is similar to refueling a gasoline car. At the hydrogen pump, you attach the nozzle to the Mirai's fueling port, and hydrogen is pumped into the car's tanks. The process takes about five minutes. Those who purchase a Mirai get six years' or $15,000 worth of free hydrogen, whichever comes first, courtesy of Toyota. Those who lease a Mirai get three years' or $15,000 worth of complimentary hydrogen fuel.
Interior
The Toyota Mirai's interior is refreshingly upscale, with a curved dash, copper-colored trim, a digital display, and high-quality materials. Insulation within the headliner helps to block heat as well as provide additional sound damping. The side windows are UV-protected and water-repellent. The entire interior scheme is leading-edge without seeming weird. Digital instruments complement the 12.3-inch display screen. The small gear selector is easy to use, and the cupholders are sizable and well-placed. Of course, the more expensive Limited trim gets more high-end features — fixed moonroof, heated and ventilated seats, and automatic tri-zone climate control, along with a striking white with black or brown color scheme. The Limited features a rear-seat touchscreen panel to control things like the temperature, audio system, and optional rear sunshade. The rear seat in both trims is spacious enough for three, but there's less legroom than you'll find in the slightly smaller Toyota Camry.
The Mirai provides 9.6 cubic feet of trunk space, which is small for a vehicle of its size; the Camry has a 15.1 cubic foot trunk. The Hyundai Nexo fuel cell crossover has 29.6 cubic feet of cargo space.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Safety
The 2024 Toyota Mirai hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0+ is now standard on the Mirai. The system includes automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, road sign assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and proactive driving assist. The Mirai's safety equipment also includes blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert.
Toyota Mirai vs. the Competition
The second-generation Toyota Mirai isn't just a technological tour de force. It is also one of the most attractive sedans currently on the market. It's a comfortable, quiet, and stunningly well-built vehicle that could easily justify a luxury badge. While not especially quick or fast, it is fun to drive and offers excellent emission-free range. The Mirai XLE can travel farther on a tank than the other fuel cell vehicle available now, the Hyundai Nexo compact crossover. Of course, the Mirai's reliance on hydrogen fuel limits its popularity. Currently, it's only available in California. Whether hydrogen will ever become widely available as a vehicle fuel is an open question. But if you reside near a hydrogen filling station, the Mirai plus Toyota's offer of $15,000 worth of fuel is a very compelling combination.

The Starting Market Average is a proprietary mathematical calculation based on actual recent transactions. It provides a statistically accurate understanding of what other buyers are paying for the least expensive configuration of this vehicle. Adjustments to the calculation beyond make, model, and trim are normalized based on detailed, anonymized transaction information. This accounts for the fact that most or all recently-sold vehicles included different option combinations. The data underlying the Starting Market Average calculation are filtered for extreme outliers and subjected to a weighted averaging process that considers factors such as the recency of transactions and the timing of data lags. In certain instances, the calculated result is adjusted to take account of abrupt changes in the market that may not yet be fully reflected by recent transaction prices. In all cases where the Starting Market Average is shown there is sufficient sample size and transaction detail to be statistically reliable.
