2021 Toyota Venza Review

Overview
Class-leading fuel economy. Smooth, powerful hybrid powertrain. High safety ratings.
Not as spacious as other midsize crossovers. High starting price for its size.
The 2021 Toyota Venza is quick and fun to drive. It's also smooth, comfortable, and sips fuel at an extremely slow rate. The Venza also just looks good, has the all-weather traction of all-wheel drive, and boasts one of Toyota's best interiors ever.
What's New for 2021
Trims and Pricing
Toyota keeps it simple by offering the new Venza in just three trim levels: LE, XLE and Limited. All-wheel drive is standard, as is a very fuel-efficient and refined hybrid powertrain. The Limited is the popular trim, but our pick for the value is the XLE.
LE
The LE comes well-equipped at a starting MSRP of $33,745 (including $1,175 shipping fee). Push-button start is standard along with dual-zone climate controls, three selectable drive modes, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system (which features Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa). The Venza LE also comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights and tail lights, fabric-trimmed seats with a power driver’s seat, soft-touch dashboard and armrests, a 60/40 split-folding rear bench with a center folding armrest, a smart key system, wireless charging station, and a comprehensive suite of driver safety features. Those features include blind-spot monitoring, lane departure alert, pre-collision detection, and radar cruise control.
XLE
The XLE is the better value, as it starts at $37,275 and includes nice upgrades such as front and rear parking sensors, passive keyless entry, 19-inch aluminum wheels, roof rails, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, SofTex trimmed leatherette heated seats with memory settings, dashboard ambient lighting, and wood-grain style trim.
Limited
The Limited adds a massive 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen paired to a JBL nine-speaker sound system, puddle lights with the Venza logo, a digital rearview mirror, a surround-view camera, heated steering wheel, touch-sensitive climate controls, and heated and ventilated perforated front seats. The Venza Limited price climbs to $41,075, making it one of the more expensive midsize crossovers. The top-of-the-line Ford Edge is similarly equipped for about $1,000 less.
Engine and Performance
The Venza's standard hybrid system combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with three electric motors to deliver 219-horsepower and class-leading fuel economy: making the Venza smooth, quiet, powerful, and fuel-efficient. Unlike the plug-in hybrid Toyota RAV4 Prime, you never have to charge the Venza's batteries to take advantage of its efficiency. Its gas engine also runs on regular-grade gasoline which keeps its operating costs down.
Many hybrids aren't fun to drive, but this one is (especially in Sport mode, which sharpens its throttle response). The Venza is also quick, hitting 60 mph in about 7.6 seconds according to Toyota. That's almost as fast as the rival Ford Edge. We also appreciate the Venza's smooth, quiet ride and quick steering. It gives a planted feel on the highway while being light enough for easy parking. Toyota's extensive experience with hybrids also shows in the responsive brakes. They feel strong but not "grabby," which has been a common complaint in many hybrids.
Fuel Economy and Range
Interior
With an overall length of 186.6 inches and 73 inches of width, the Toyota Venza is one of the smallest crossovers in the midsize class. Most of its rivals, including the Chevrolet Blazer, offer more interior space. However, the Venza will easily carry a family of four: offering plenty of rear headroom and legroom for lanky teenagers. It's also got enough cargo space for strollers and other assorted baby gear. Its seats are comfortable even after many hours on the road while the 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen (optional) is one of the largest in the industry. We also really like the Star Gaze, which is Toyota's electrochromic panoramic sunroof. Available only in the Limited model, this glass sunroof transforms from completely see-through to opaque at the push of a button.
There are SUVs in this class with significantly more cargo space, including the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport and Honda Passport, but the Venza's 28.8 cubic feet will be sufficient for most. Fold its rear seats and the usable space expands to 55.1 cubic feet.

Toyota Venza vs. the Competition
With its class-leading fuel economy, strong performance, and luxurious feel, the new 2021 Toyota Venza is a great combination of refinement and practicality. It's far from the biggest midsize crossover, but its smaller dimensions keep the Venza maneuverable and easy to park. If you need more room, there's always Toyota's three-row Highlander or equally competent vehicles such as the Ford Edge or the Subaru Ascent (the Ascent also offers standard all-wheel drive). If you're looking for something slightly less expensive, the Honda Passport is a sporty alternative with a lower base price.
