2020 Toyota Yaris Review

Overview
Economical engine and nimble handling; Upmarket interior for the low price
Underpowered engine compared to rivals; No manual transmission with Hatchback
The Toyota Yaris takes the concept of necessary transportation and adds a hefty dash of fun to the mix. Its low curb weight and pintsize engine provide exceptional fuel economy, and an agile chassis helps it feel sportier than many rivals. The subcompact Yaris is the smallest car Toyota sells in the US, and so narrow streets and parking situations are a breeze. The Yaris comes as a sedan or hatchback.
What's New for 2020
Trims and Pricing
The Yaris Sedan is available in three trim levels: L, LE, and XLE. The Hatchback comes in LE and XLE trims.
Starting around $16,000, the L trim comes with halogen headlights, 15-inch wheels, variable intermittent wipers, manual air conditioning, cloth upholstery, 6-way driver’s seat, 4-way passenger seat, 60/40 split fold-down rear seats, remote keyless entry, push-button start, a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and a low-speed emergency braking system.
The LE retails for about $17,000 and adds fog lights, 16-inch wheels, and proximity keyless entry.
The XLE trim has an MSRP of about $19,000 and comes with automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, automatic climate control, leatherette seating, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Engine and Performance
The Yaris gets its power from a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 106 hp and 103 lb-ft of torque. It runs on regular unleaded fuel. A 6-speed manual transmission or 6-speed automatic is available on the L and LE Sedan trims. The XLE Sedan, as well as the LE and XLE Hatchbacks, do not offer the manual.
The EPA estimates the Yaris Sedan with manual transmission should return 34 mpg combined or 35 mpg with the automatic.
The Yaris is a front-wheel drive car.
Interior
The interior of the Yaris is simple and easy to operate. The design scheme feels like that of a more expensive car, especially with the XLE’s leatherette upholstery. The bucket seats are supportive, and all of the controls are nicely within reach.
The Yaris comes standard with an intuitive touchscreen infotainment system, which allows users to change the settings on a wide range of vehicle functions. It includes Bluetooth.
The headroom is very good, and visibility is excellent. Rear legroom is snug but that is expected for the segment. The sedan has a 13.5 cubic-foot trunk, which should be plenty for most people. The hatchback has slightly more cargo space, at 15.9 cubic feet.
