2021 Volvo V60 Review

Overview
Looks and feels like a luxury car; Practical enough for daily life; Impressive safety technology; Great fuel economy
Some rivals are sportier to drive; All-wheel drive unavailable on most trims; Limited in-cabin storage
Swedish carmaker Volvo is known for building comfortable cars with a focus on safety. This approach has made it a favorite among families, and the Volvo V60 wagon is the brand’s bread-and-butter. Its sleek body styling feels more upscale than your average people-hauler, with a gorgeous interior that emphasizes Scandinavian design. A practical liftback makes cargo access a breeze, and there is Apple CarPlay and WiFi access for keeping kids happy.
What's New for 2021
Trims and Pricing
Volvo offers the midsize V60 wagon in four trim levels: Momentum, Inscription, R-Design, and Polestar.
The entry-level Momentum trim comes with a starting price of approximately $41,000, which situates it squarely in the middle of its segment. Volvo includes a front-wheel drivetrain that gives the V60 a blend of agility and all-weather traction. A suite of advanced driver features helps keep the V60 in its driving lane and a safe distance from pedestrians and cars, including systems like blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and automatic emergency braking. Other amenities include a motion-activated liftgate, a panoramic moonroof, automatic LED headlights, leather upholstery, 8-way power front seats, remote engine start, keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, a 9-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a WiFi hotspot, and a 10-speaker audio system.
The Inscription is more luxurious, with Nappa leather upholstery, three-zone climate control, a heated steering wheel, a Harman Kardon premium sound system, and unique styling cues for around $46,500. The R-Design goes in a sportier direction for the same price, adding bolstered seats trimmed in Nappa leather, black exterior accents, and metal cabin trim.
At the top of the lineup is the Polestar, which is the high-performance wagon. Pricing starts at around $67,000. It adds a plug-in hybrid powertrain making 415 hp, forged alloy wheels, a surround-view camera, a heads-up display, heated seats, adaptive cruise control, wireless device charging, and a Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system.
Shoppers can select from various optional features to equip their V60 to meet their needs. Automatic parking assistance and advanced air filtration provide extra peace of mind in new environments.
Engine and Performance
The V60 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It connects to an 8-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. This powertrain is not quite as potent or quick as competitors, but it provides enough pickup for daily driving. It is also exceptionally quiet, and this contributes to the V60’s hushed interior atmosphere. The fuel economy is 23 mpg in the city and an excellent 34 mpg highway.
The Polestar also comes with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, but it has been turbocharged and supercharged to produce 415 hp and 494 lb-ft of torque. Part of that power comes thanks to a hybrid-electric system that includes regenerative braking and a start-stop system. This gives the Polestar impressive speed, with an EPA-estimated 30 mpg in mixed driving and 21 miles of all-electric range. And, if you need all-wheel drive with your V60, the Polestar is the only choice.
