2021 Volvo V90 Review

Overview
Fuel-efficient powertrains; Excellent standard safety technology; Beautiful interior styling; Practical for active families
Missing some high-end features; Lacks rivals' rear-seat legroom; Could use more power
Volvo station wagons have long been a favorite among active families, with their safety features and available all-wheel-drive. The Volvo V90 is the brand's flagship wagon, delivering luxury and practicality in equal amounts. Its sleek body and minimalist cabin showcase Scandinavian design, coddling passengers in Nappa leather and other high-quality materials. Excellent fuel economy and agile handling make the V90 a tempting SUV alternative.
What's New for 2021
Trims and Pricing
Pricing for the R-Design T5 and Inscription T5 starts around $52,500, with a sleek wagon body, front-wheel-drive, and 250-hp engine. The V90's elegant exterior features curve-adaptive LED headlights, power-folding mirrors, a panoramic moonroof, and a hands-free liftgate.
Inside the cabin, passengers have access to heated front seats with 12-way power adjustment, a split-folding rear bench, keyless entry/ignition, remote engine start, four-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system, a WiFi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, and wireless device charging.
Volvo station wagons are famous for their safety technology, and the V90 continues this storied tradition. Forward-collision warning alerts the driver of an impending obstacle, and automatic emergency braking can step in if they do not react in time. Front and rear parking sensors relieve some of the worries when maneuvering around town. Volvo also includes pedestrian detection technology, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and more.
Though each contains all of the features mentioned above, the R-Design and Inscription trims differ in their style. The R-Design opts for a sportier theme, with leather sports seats, metal mesh inlays, and a sport-tuned suspension. Meanwhile, the Inscription is decidedly posher, with perforated leather, chrome exterior accents, oak wood inlays, and 10-spoke wheels.
Moving up to the R-Design T6 and Inscription T6 brings the MSRP to roughly $58,500, adding a more powerful engine and all-wheel-drive.
Engine and Performance
Volvo's engine choices are impressive for their smooth power and surprisingly efficiency. The entry-level T5 cars use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It connects to an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel-drive. The engine provides adequate power for getting around town and conquering hilly environments. Its fuel economy is excellent at an EPA-estimated 33 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg in mixed driving.
Stepping up to the T6 adds a turbo-and-supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Having two forced-induction systems gives the T6 a broad power band. It produces 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration is quicker, and the T6 feels sportier to drive than the T5. It also comes with Volvo's excellent all-wheel-drive system for harsh weather conditions. Fuel efficiency remains virtually the same even with the extra power and weight. The T6 should get up to 32 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg overall.
Interior
The Volvo V90 shares its interior design with the S90 sedan and XC90 SUV, the Swedish automaker's other flagship 90-series vehicles. These models feature beautiful minimalist style. The V90 has perhaps the most attractive cabin in its category, crafted from high-quality materials with careful attention to detail. The interior is at once roomy and practical while also being plush and upscale. It serves just as well as a luxury car as it would a family car.
Nappa leather upholstery covers both rows, with heated and power-adjustable front seats. The Inscription trim offers four color schemes: Slate, Blonde, Amber, or Charcoal; these come with either ash wood or oak wood inlays. The R-Design features sportier bucket seats, with deeper side bolsters and more contouring.
Volvo's infotainment system is not the most intuitive in its category. It has an elegant 9.0-inch vertical touchscreen, but the angle of the glass can show smudges. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard for seamless integration of your smartphone. You can also turn the V90 into a winter-weather machine with the optional Climate Package, equipping a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and heated windshield wipers.
The driver and front-seat passenger have over 42 inches of legroom for stretching out on long trips. Back-seat passengers don't have quite as much space as in other midsize wagons, with just under 36 inches of legroom. The V90's meticulous attention to detail and comfortable seats make up for the limited space. Those in the back have their own dual-zone automatic climate controls.
The V90's main change from its S90 sedan sibling is its wagon body style, sporting 19.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity. That's good, though it doesn't match other premium wagons. Larger items may require folding down the V90's back seats.
